Since October 2017, there is a new star in the crypto sky: Tezos. The special feature: Tezos offers companies (and private individuals) a transaction environment in which they can realise business models based on tokens. And without having to develop a blockchain!

In this article, we show how and where you can best buy Tezos, which exchanges there are and whether you can also get XTZ tokens with PayPal.

Buying Tezos: What to look out for

As Tezos has some differences to Bitcoin & Co, there are also differences when buying Bitcoin. Above all, you should pay attention to the following factors:

Where is the best place to buy Tezos? The best place to buy Tezos is the #1 broker/exchange - eToro. At our test winner you can not only buy real Tezos but also leveraged Tezos CFDs, thousands of shares, ETFs and much more. And all that with extremely low fees.
Do I want to hold Tezos for the long term, use it for IoT applications or speculate on the price? As with all cryptocurrencies, we recommend trading quickly as they are very volatile. Although we also see Tezos as being very solid in the long term, there is significantly more money to be made with the coin if you act quickly and reactively.
How does a Tezos Wallet work? A Tezos wallet works like all other crypto wallets. A detailed description can be found in this article.
Is it worth investing in Tezos? Yes! According to the analysis of our experts, the big Tezos hype is still to come. We therefore recommend investing in this coin.

How to buy Tezos: Three-step guide

Buy Tezos: If you want to start trading the cryptocurrency Tezos, there are only a few exchanges available at the moment. Which one is right for you also depends on how much you want to invest. Another relevant question is: Do you want to buy Tezos with Bitcoin - or do you want to buy the Tezos Coin with a credit card? We will introduce you to our recommended exchange and guide you through the process step by step.

We use the broker eToro for this purpose, as it offers the advantage that you can buy both real cryptocurrencies and CFDs - in other words, it combines the advantages of a broker and an exchange. We will discuss the difference between a broker and an exchange below. In addition, there is unfortunately hardly any competition. Most providers either do not trade Tezos at all or "force" you to buy another cryptocurrency first and then exchange it for Tezos. Still others only offer CFDs, after which you don't actually own an XTZ coin.

First step: Registering with a broker or crypto exchange

The first step is to register with a broker or crypto exchange.

For our example, we chose eToro because here we can buy both real Tezos to hold and Tezos derivatives to speculate.

First, we click on the link to register with eToro:

In the form, we enter our user name, email and password and accept the terms and conditions:

We then receive a verification email in which we click on the link to confirm the account.

Second step: Top up our account

In the next step, we need to fund our account with money in order to buy Tezos. To do this, we click on the "Deposit money" button at eToro.

Then we choose the amount and the payment method we want to deposit with and then click on the "Send" button to deposit the amount.

Buy Tezos Coin with PayPal, Sofortüberweisung and more

In our example we show the purchase with credit card. However, eToro also offers other ways to deposit:

Third step: Buy Tezos

Now that we have topped up our account, we can start with the actual purchase of Tezos. To do this, we click in the search field at the top and enter "Tezos" there.

Then we click on the button "Trade".
The purchase window then opens. Here we have the following options:

  •     Buy or sell: In our case, we have to set it to "buy
  •     Trade or order: Here we can choose whether we want to execute the trade immediately (trade) or with a time delay (order).
  •     Amount: How much Tezos wants to buy.
  •     Stop Loss and Take Profit: At which loss or profit our position should be sold automatically.
  •     Leverage: With which leverage we want to buy Tezos. With leverage X1 we buy real Tezos, with leverage X2 we buy leveraged Tezos CFDs.

After we have configured all options, we click on the "Open Trade" button to complete the purchase.

Then we have the Tezos in our portfolio, the purchase is completed!

Broker or stock exchange: Where is the best way to buy Tezos?

Now that we have shown one way to buy Tezos quickly, easily and safely, there are of course other ways.

The question of how and where to buy Tezos is closely related to the second question, namely whether you want to hold Tezos for the long term or speculate on the price development in the short term.

For short-term speculation, a CFD broker is recommended, where you speculate on the price development of Tezos without holding the underlying asset directly. The advantage of a broker is that you can also trade with leverage, so that even small price fluctuations can result in high profits or losses.

If you want to hold Tezos for a longer period of time, you are better off with a crypto exchange:

To buy Tezos or not?

  • It is not easy to say whether it is worth investing in Tezos. In general, the crypto market is subject to great fluctuations. In addition, regulations are still lacking, which is why fraud with cryptocurrencies is still flourishing. For these reasons, you should not choose your investment lightly. Of course, this also applies to Tezos. On the other hand, Tezos is already quite strong despite its young history. The large market capitalisation promises a comparatively manageable risk compared to other cryptocurrencies.

Pro und Contra Tezos-Anlage

  •     Great community
  •     dApps and Smart Contracts
  •     DPoS algorithm for consensus building in the network
  •     Good dissemination

  • Lack of regulation of cryptocurrencies
  • Only available on a few exchanges so far

Tezos (XTZ) is a decentralised, blockchain-based cryptocurrency and a platform for decentralised applications. Like Ethereum, the platform offers a development environment in which companies or even private individuals can implement their own token-based business models without first having to develop a blockchain themselves. That is why smart contracts are a fundamental part of the Tezos ecosystem.

Tezos uses a delegated proof-of-work algorithm (DPoS) that allows stakeholders to influence the further development of the platform and to be rewarded for validating transactions in the network. For example, stakeholders can decide to pay individuals or groups for their work on the Tezos protocol. In this way, Tezos promises, the ecosystem will optimise and evolve on its own.

Tezos officially launched in September 2018 after raising a record-breaking $232 million in an ICO. The development of the cryptocurrency was initiated in 2014 by founders Arthur and Kathleen Breitman with a core group of developers. The Tezos Foundation, led by Ryan Jesperson, is primarily responsible for asset management and the further development of the protocol and the Tezos ecosystem. The rights to the source code are held by the founding company Dynamic Ledger Solutions, whose managing directors are Kathleen and Arthur Breitman. DLS has its headquarters in Switzerland.

After the ICO, Tezos experienced distortions between the founding company DLS and the Tezos Foundation. The Tezos share price then collapsed briefly. After the then president of the Foundation, Johann Gevers, finally left the company as a result of the dispute (and received a severance payment of 400,000 US dollars), the problems subsided and the development of the Tezos ecosystem progressed. Today, Tezos ranks 17th in the ranking of the largest cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation, with a market capitalisation of around 700 million euros.

What are the fees for buying Tezos?

To make the fees for buying Tezos comparable, let's take the following example:

We would like to buy 1,000€ worth of Tezos.
We want to hold the Tezos for one year and then pay them back into our account in euros.
For simplicity's sake, let's assume that the exchange rate does not change during that year.

With these assumptions we now go through the fees of our test winner:

Tezos Wallets: Which wallets are useful for post-purchase storage?

Is a wallet necessary for trading with Tezos? Not necessarily. For example, on eToro it is possible to store Tezos on your account. However, it is advisable to transfer the coin to your own wallet. A software wallet is certainly a good option for your coins for the first time. If you want to hold Tezos for a longer period of time, we recommend a hardware wallet instead, as they are unsurpassed in terms of security.

There are many wallets with which you can store and use Tezos. You can read which wallets the company recommends to its users here. There is also support for the common hardware wallets.

Since there are a few criteria to consider here that would go beyond the scope of this article, here is the link to the wallet comparison:

Historical Tezos exchange rate: Important milestones in the history of Tezos

The cryptocurrency has had its share of ups and downs. We show the most important milestones in the history of Tezos.

Historical Tezos exchange

  •    December 2017: Tezos managed to pump investments of over 200 million euros into its product in a very short time. The share price shot up from just under €1.35 to an astronomical €8.96. That is over 560% in less than a month. However, after 1 month, the Tezos share price fell back to just under €2.50, as Tezos was still in its infancy.
  •     February 2018: The auditing company "Least Authority" rated Tezos with 5 picks, which caused the Tezos share price to rise from ~2.50€ to ~3.50€ for a short time.
  •     June 2018: The actual release of the actual coin saw the price rise from €2 to over €4 over 4 months. However, the hype did not last long and along with other cryptocurrencies, the Tezos price dropped to below 2€.
  •     May 2019: The Marigold update of Tezos caused the price to rise slowly over months. This is how the price rose which
  •     February 2020: The release of payment targets and updates to the core protocol etc. gave Tezos a new lease of life. Thus, the Tezos share price rose from just under 1€ to over 3€ again. However, the pandemic step through the stock market caused the coin to fall again.
  •     May 2020: After the initial scares of the global disease, Tezos continued its rise and 2 months later almost reached the level of 2 months ago.
  •     August 2020: Congress let it be known that you don't want to tax Tezos staking rewards too much. Since Tezos is on proof-of-stake, this represented a clear buy recommendation for Tezos for shareholders. As a result, the share price rose to almost 4€ within a very short time.

Alternatives to Tezos: buy other cryptocurrencies or shares

In various forums, people like to discuss how to buy Tezos shares. However, such interested traders are a little ahead of their time.

Furthermore, Tezos is more involved in research and cooperates with reputable educational institutes such as the IMDEA Software Institute, Korea University Blockchain Reasearch Institute, Konkuk University and many more. As these companies are not public limited companies, alternatives are more likely to be found in the competition or in products that are used to mine Tezos.

Alternatives to Tezos

Alternative 1: Opportunities in the field of cryptocurrencies

Apart from that, there are also other cryptocurrencies that definitely have potential:

Buy Bitcoin: The top dog among cryptocurrencies is considered by many to be the "digital gold" and one of the most stable cryptos in terms of value.
Buy Ripple: With the backing of many banks, Ripple is a good alternative to Tezos.
Buy Ethereum: Ethereum is the solution for smart contracts and takes a broadly similar approach to Tezos.

Alternative 2: Crypto stocks

Another alternative is crypto stocks: chip manufacturers, mining companies and even the Bitcoin Group have been able to post strong profits so far.

Bitcoin shares: If you think that Bitcoin will outperform Tezos, Bitcoin shares are a good alternative.
NVIDIA shares: NVIDIA produces important graphics chips especially for mining - if the crypto boom continues, NVIDIA is certainly a good investment.

How can one invest in Tezos?

How to buy Tezos? Tezos can be bought for real money or cryptocurrencies on the platforms described above. We recommend buying Tezos on Kraken.

Can you buy Tezos with a credit card?

Despite a long search, we could not find an exchange where it is possible to buy Tezos with a credit card.

Is it possible to trade Tezos with Paypal?

Unfortunately, buying Tezos with Paypal is not possible on any of the exchanges we use.

Will Tezos continue to increase in value?

Only time will tell. The opinions of the experts differ widely here.

With buy and sell orders, however, you can determine for yourself whether you prefer to bet on rising or falling prices. If the market as a whole continues to grow, Tezos will most likely profit from this.

Do I need a Tezos Wallet?

Not mandatory, but we recommend it. A wallet protects you from eventualities such as the unexpected insolvency of your exchange platform.

Can I use my Bitcoin Wallet?

That depends on whether your wallet also supports the cryptocurrency Tezos. If in doubt, it is advisable to ask the provider directly. Most wallets now support several coins.

However, we are not aware of a Bitcoin wallet that also supports Tezos.

What is the best way to invest in Tezos?

We recommend Kraken for the purchase of Tezos. Other cryptocurrencies can also be traded here. For example, you could also buy Ripple or Ethereum here.
