New York calls for no mining at 'dirty' power plants

An action group from businesses, organizations and labor groups in New York State has sent a letter to authorities asking them to deny permits to retrofit fossil fuel-fired power plants into cryptocurrency mining centres.

The message to Governor Cathy Hocul expressed concern about the environmental impact of mining digital assets.

Requests for facility upgrades came from power plant operators Greenidge Generation and Fortistar North Tonawanda.

"Expanding mining in New York could undermine the state's climate goals set out in the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act. Approval would jeopardise the state's progress in meeting commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions," the letter said.

Recall that in July, New York State residents accused Greenidge Generation of environmental violations.
